TMPGEnc MPEG Editor 3 With Blu-Ray BDAV Production

Just when I thought I had the ultimate in MPEG editing with TMPGEnc MPEG Editor 2 Premium
Pegasys come up with TMPGEnc MPEG editor 3 which is available as a free upgrade.
Here we have all the functions of MPEG Editor 2 Plus the ability to build a BDAV Blu-Ray movie & burn it to BD-R/RE disc.
As I reviewed TMPGEnc MPEG Editor 2 Premium earlier I am concentrating this review on the Blu-Ray features.
For a full outline of all the features Look Here

I have a Sharp BD-HP20H Blu-Ray player which from the specifications should be able to play BD-R/RE discs but no information is given as to what particular types of files or file system are playable. After a lot of research & advice from Sharp I find that the player is compatible with recordings created on the stand alone set top Blu-Ray disc recorders marketed in Japan.

The only software I could find to create compatible discs was Sony's Click to Disc™ bundled with the top end Vaio™ laptops. The recording format is BDAV which is a basic format without menus and although there are various softwares out there to compile the titles I was unable to find one with the tight specification for the files to be playable on my Sharp BD-HP20H.

BDAV output requires the source video characteristics match the BDAV standard set out below and with TMPGEnc MPEG Editor 3 I have successfully produced playable BD-R media with files of 720p & 1080i. The limitations of the Sharp player prohibit it from playing BD-RE media or 1080p movie files

The Blu-Ray format of MPEG Editor 3 will not allow the Blu-Ray disc to be created if the compilation falls outside of the BDAV specification and indicates where the problem lies.
The help file lists the full specification limitations and below is a basic extract from these
Supported BDAV format

It is possible to output an HDV format source file into BDAV format but since such output is out of the BDAV standard compatibility of such file with a BDAV player is low.

The interface of MPEG Editor 3 is not unlike its predecessors, with the start page having the addition of the launch panel for the writing tool which brings up the basic writing tool for DVD & Blu-Ray

The source & edit are unchanged with audio filters and transitions between clips

There are Four Output Formats available

If the output is selected there is also the option to burn the movie to DVD or BD-R/RE after compilation

Having used TMPGEnc products for several years now I have always been impressed with the ease of use without extensive use of the manual or help files. This product is no exception to his rule and is an excellent product I recommend to beginners as well as professionals alike
I does what it says on the tin
